With repeated use and over time, the hydraulic oil in tools will break down and become less effective. This is a normal process and occurs for a number of different reasons.
Water – Water enters the hydraulic system either through carelessness when handling the oil, damaged seals or through condensation. It is not unknown that oil and water do not mix, and in a pressurized hydraulic system they cause foaming and cavitation. Water will also lead to clogged filters, reduced lubrication and corrosion.
Airing – Airing occurs when air enters the system through seals, fittings or maintenance. The air trapped within the system can cause cavitation, which causes spongy or slow hydraulic response. Hydraulics rely on fluids being incompressible, and a system containing air is more elastic. The resulting oxidation from the air can increase viscosity, create sludge, leach additives and increase the acidity of the oil.
Cavitation – Cavitation is when vapor bubbles are produced as a result of a rapid change in fluid pressure. These bubbles then collapse, causing small vibrations and shock waves. If this happens repeatedly, metal parts in the system can be damaged.
When do you know you should change your hydraulic oil?
– When the oil is dirty, you see sludge or the oil has darkened
– If you find residue in the reservoir
– When the oil foams (contaminated with air)
– If it is milky (contaminated with water)
The best way to extend the life of your hydraulic oil is to minimize contamination. You can do this by being careful when setting up and connecting the system. Before connecting the hydraulic hoses, make sure to remove any dirt and moisture from the couplings and other components.
